Đurić: Continuous advancement of relations between Serbia and the United States is a constant
“We are all fully aware that we live in a time of immense global turbulence, with polarization not only affecting our two countries, but also characterizing a much wider public and media space for intense economic, political, and military competition—both in our region and beyond. Yet what remains constant in such difficult times is the continuous advancement of relations between our two countries, despite turbulent and challenging circumstances we are at times faced with,” Đurić observed.
The Foreign Minister underlined that this is a time of great opportunities and new prospects for cooperation between Serbia and the United States.
“New horizons of cooperation are opening—and this is not just a phrase. One of the best confirmations of this reality is the publicly announced intention of our two countries to open, in the coming months, a formal strategic dialogue,” he stated, recalling that this was also discussed during his recent meeting with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, which he described as a meeting of exceptional importance.
“I am a strong advocate of the strategic dialogue between Serbia and the United States, because beyond the political messages, it introduces a practical structure, organization, and order to our bilateral cooperation. This means regular meetings, exchanges, and planned programmatic activities between our ministries, agencies, and institutions, in a manner that is not the case with countries that do not share this type of relationship,” Đurić explained.
Highlighting that this is an opportunity to focus on cooperation with practical results, he singled out energy as one of the important areas.
“Last September, I had the honor of signing the Strategic Partnership Agreement in the field of energy, which represents a step toward greater energy security for our country, diversification of electricity supply, as well as new opportunities for economically valuable projects in this field,” the Minister stressed.
Welcoming guests from the Ohio National Guard, Minister Đurić recalled that the partnership between the Serbian Armed Forces and the Ohio National Guard last year marked its eighteenth anniversary.
“This partnership has completely changed the perception of defense relations between our two countries—of the Serbian soldier in America and the American soldier in Serbia—and it has paved the way for much broader defense cooperation,” Đurić underlined.
Turning to other areas that will form part of the strategic dialogue, the Foreign Minister emphasized its comprehensive nature.
“It places our relations in an entirely different category, elevates them to a new level, and helps us to turn a new page in a substantive sense in relations with a country with which we share 144 years of friendship, a friendship I am confident can significantly contribute to the future of Serbia,” he stressed.
Đurić welcomed the video address by Claudia Tenney, Co-Chair of the Serbian Caucus in the U.S. House of Representatives, noting the importance of parliamentary cooperation.
“Parliamentary cooperation, both in Serbia and in the United States, enjoys universal political support,” Đurić stated.
He further noted that, just as the administration of President Trump is viewing bilateral relations with fresh eyes, reciprocity is visible on Serbia’s side as well, as the country approaches the shaping of cooperation with great enthusiasm.
“We hope to have the opportunity to host the President of the United States in Belgrade, where he would be received with the warmest of welcomes—unparalleled in this part of Europe. It is no secret that President Trump, both as President and even before taking office, has enjoyed enormous sympathy among the people of Serbia,” concluded Minister of Foreign Affairs Marko Đurić.
