Serbia’s candidate elected a member of the UN Human Rights Committee

At the 39th meeting of the States Parties of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights in New York, Serbia’s candidate, Professor PhD Tijana Šurlan, was elected a member of the UN Human Rights Committee for the period 2023–2026 in the first round of voting.

Candidates of 16 other countries also participated in the elections for nine members of the Committee: Netherlands, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Japan, USA, Azerbaijan, Chile, Albania, Brazil, France, Senegal, Costa Rica, Benin, Turkey, Lithuania and Slovenia.

The UN Human Rights Committee is a treaty body of the United Nations, whose purview includes control of the enforcement of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by its States Parties. The Committee consists of 18 independent experts, elected for a 4-year period, based on their relevant experience, as well as an even geographical distribution.
