Political relations

Relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Maldives are based on friendship and cooperation established within the Non-Aligned Movement and have significant potential for improvement in various areas, for which there is mutual interest between the two countries.
Although in the previous decade there was no exchange of official visits between the two countries at the highest level, as well as at the level of foreign ministers, in recent years there has been progress in the intensity of mutual contacts.

On the sidelines of the 5th United Nations Conference on Least Developed Countries (LDC5) on March 5, 2023 in Qatar, President R. Aleksandar Vučić of Serbia met for the first time with President R. Maldives by Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Minister of Foreign Affairs R. Maldives Abdula Shahid paid an official visit to Belgrade on 4-6. November 2022 at the invitation of the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs R. of Serbia Ivica Dačić During the visit, a Memorandum of Understanding and bilateral political consultations between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia was signed. Serbia and R. Maldives. Minister of Foreign Affairs R. On that occasion, Maldives had a meeting with the President of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Vladimir Orlić.

On the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, on September 20, 2022, president of the Republic of Serbia Aleksandar Vučić had a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Maldives Abdulla Shahid, with whom the then Minister of Foreign Affairs R. Serbia Nikola Selaković also had meeting on September 19, 2022.

Acting Assistant Minister for Bilateral Cooperation Ambassador Vladimir Marić met Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of Maldives Ahmed Khaleel on October 12, 2021, on the sidelines of High-level Commemorative Meeting on the occasion of 60th Anniversary of the Non-Aligned Movement, in Belgrade.

 During the Maldives Partnership Forum, 17 – 18 June 2019, the then Minister of Labour, Employment, Veterans and Social Affairs of the Republic of Serbia Zoran. Djordjević, among others, had talks with the President of the Republic of Maldives Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and the President of the Maldivian Parliament Mohamed Nashid.

Economic relations

Economic cooperation is not contractually regulated and is very modest in scope. The total trade exchange of Serbia with Maldives in 2022 was $710,000, of which the value of exports was $245,000 and imports were $465,000.

Bilateral agreements

There are no valid signed agreements between the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Maldives.
